I have had my miniature poodle for a month. We have tried not to stress him out. He scared of everything. We have tried clicker training, but only responds to sit. He can do that well. This is our first dog ever.I can't get my 3 month puppy to go forward on the leash? Can anyone give me advice on how to walk my dog?
I just went thru this with my papillon puppy...this is what I did...
I noticed he would freeze when the leash extended over his head...looking up he would see it and it must have frightened him. I held the leash short and straight up....solved that problem.
Position him on your left side, leash held straight up to your left hand, the extra across the front of your body with the end of the leash grasped firmly in your right hand....your left controls the amount of slack he is given. Your right holds the leash firmly so he can't race off on you.
When he balked I did NOT coddle him with a sympathetic ';That's alright, Puppy, come on...'; No pets or pats either....it's like rewarding him for being apprehensive... A simple 'Let's go'; in a firm, friendly, no nonsense voice and a gentle tug on the leash...if you lift him up slightly and move him foreward (Only if he's on a body harness, NOT a neck collar) using the leash the momentum may give him the idea....subtle %26amp; gentle....try to keep all 4 paws on the ground as we are moving him forward, not swinging him lol. Nor should you drag him.
When I was having the same problems, quite a few people here on Yahoo Answers suggested I let my pap walk about the house inside wearing his harness %26amp; dragging the leash, then try walking holding the leash in the house..I did that and it worked! I did 2 short 5 minutes sessions with the house walking for two days-by the third he was willing to walk about the house on his lead.....took one outing after that to convince him it was fun!
Now I have a papillon and they have a rep for learning quickly....so do poodles.....I had a toy poodle as a teenager, smart little buggers they are....just DON';T coddle them or let them get away with naughty behavior-I suggest reading up on Small Dog Syndrome
As soon as he starts walking, Praise...'Good job, Puppy (his name) good job!'; Use a different pitch/tone with praise than you do when commanding him to ';leave it' or ';no';....they go more by tone than words....and NOT HOW LOUD, EITHER-yelling doesn't work.
Have patience...you've got a baby. And for a dog walking I strongly advise a harness...collars are for rabies %26amp; ID tags..., harnesses give you more control of the dog, besides imagine if some one pulled you around by your neck...plus you can do serious damage to a small dog's windpipe....and I've yet to hear of any dog slipping out of his body harness if properly put on and fastened.I can't get my 3 month puppy to go forward on the leash? Can anyone give me advice on how to walk my dog?
Put the leash on him %26amp; just let him drag it around the house to get used to it (make sure it's not really heavy), try calling him while it's on %26amp; making him follow you..later pick up the leash but leave a bit of slack in it %26amp; follow him everywhere he wants to go...just until he's used to it, then he may not have a problem following you on it...
This won't all happen in 1 day
i started out walking my puppy with someone (either my mom or brother) walking in front of me, which made him want to follow them. another benefit to that is that dogs can feel like they are superior to their owner if they walk in front of their owner. If you do a pack walk, with someone in front of you, they will know that YOU are the master. hope that helps :]
Put properly fitted collar on....attached lead....%26amp; GO!!!
It ***WILL***quickly discover that walking is much preferable to being dragged!!!
But....you had it a a month %26amp; it's already trained YOU....it's got your number %26amp; that number is ZERO! I don't see anybody leaping up take responsibility over an animal yet!
Aren't you stronger bigger smarter than a pup? It appears not. What a shame ,another perfectly good dog ruined.by spineless humans,
how old is it?? what i did to get them started was to jogg with them or have my husbando hold them and i would start running so they would follow me and start running, after the third time they were fine walking jogging, stay and go are some of the comands i try to practice with them
You %26amp; your dog need to enroll into an obedience class. They are usually 6 to 8 weeks long. You go once a week %26amp; have a week to practice what you both learned. The instructors teach you how to train your dog.

Go at the dogs pace. if he wants to stop and sit around thats fine, for now. try having someone go in front and lure him with treats. or try one of those little harness things so its more like tugging her whole body and not just choking her neck. reward good behavior.
make sure he get real use to you then you can take him out for a walk ( with out leash) if he runs off call his name and continue walking.
dog should never walk in front of you they should only walk behind you or along side of you.
When i got my baby shih tzu she did the same thing. Tug at the leash and say her name.Bring a treat with u and hold it away.
Hope I helped
