Does anyone have suggestions on how to get editorials, small news stories and self help advice published?

Many of the papers have online presence and describe precisely how to submit guest or commentary columns via email and I have found smaller editors especially receptive.

In my experience, the topic needs to be timely, of course. If you are a far-away writer, you'll need to say why you are best to write it. You should also be aware that smaller papers like local contributors so explain why, for instance, if you're living in Dublin, you're submitting a column to a paper in Iowa. You ought to modify your column for each small paper to whom you submit, after first reading some local coverage to customize it necessarily, e.g., ';the recent student protest here in Omaha, Nebraska, reminds us of the core issue of ...'; and then go into your commentary.

Most want to see complete columns (not queries) and want to know the material is exclusive to them and not submitted elsewhere.

Good Luck.
